What is Sleep Apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is perhaps the most common, yet most debilitating, sleep disorder of all. This condition refers to the partial obstruction of the airways, which usually occurs when the soft tissues of the mouth (like the tongue) and throat relax during sleep.

An ‘apnoea’ is where the body completely stops breathing and a ‘hypopnea’ occurs when the breath is severely restricted. These can happen anywhere between 5 – 1000 times each night, causing a number of potentially harmful side effects for the sufferer.

Could You Be Suffering from Sleep Apnoea?

Often, a person may not be aware that they have the disorder until they are assessed by an oral health care professional. Some of the tell-tale signs of sleep apnoea can include:

  • Poor concentration
  • Mood swings
  • Snoring
  • Excessive drowsiness and irritability during the day (which isn’t relieved by sleep)
  • Dry mouth and throat
  • Weight gain
  • Headaches, most often in the morning upon waking
